Existing finishes

Overlay, Replace or Hack Existing Tiles?

Overlay may be considered only when the existing tiles and substrate are suitable. Floor buildup, door and fixture clearances, drainage and the wet-area waterproofing condition can affect whether it is workable.

Hacking may be more appropriate where existing finishes require removal, the substrate needs deeper repair, levels must be corrected or the waterproofing scope needs replacement.

Preparation and waterproofing

Tiles and Grout Are Not the Waterproofing System

Tiles and grout form the visible finish. The substrate, preparation and any underlying waterproofing system are separate parts of the work and should be identified in the confirmed quotation.

Wet-area tiling may require coordination with the waterproofing scope before installation begins. Tiling alone should not be relied on to correct leakage.

Tiling FAQ

Common Tiling Questions

Where does RenoExpert provide tiling services?

RenoExpert handles residential floor and wall tiling for HDB flats, condominiums, apartments and landed homes across Singapore, subject to the site condition and confirmed project scope.

Can existing tiles be overlaid?

Overlay may be considered when the existing tiles and substrate are suitable and the resulting floor buildup, clearances, drainage and wet-area conditions remain workable. A site assessment is needed before the method is confirmed.

When is tile hacking required?

Hacking may be more appropriate where existing finishes need removal, tiles or the substrate are unsuitable, levels require correction, waterproofing needs replacement or the proposed layout cannot be achieved through overlay.

Is waterproofing included with tiling?

Tiles and grout are not the waterproofing system. Where wet-area waterproofing is required, the underlying waterproofing scope must be assessed and stated separately in the confirmed quotation before tiling begins.

Who supplies the tiles and installation materials?

Tiles may be owner supplied or supplied by RenoExpert, depending on the confirmed quotation. RenoExpert supplies the required adhesive or mortar, cement and grout for the confirmed tiling scope. Any trims, skirting or special finishing items should be confirmed in the quotation.

What is the minimum tiling project value?

Tiling enquiries are accepted for projects from S$5,000. The service is intended for larger renovation scopes rather than isolated one- or two-tile repairs.

RenoExpert installs porcelain, homogeneous and ceramic tiles for suitable residential floor and wall applications within the confirmed project scope.

Share the property type, room or area, approximate dimensions, photographs, existing finish, proposed tile type and size if selected, tile-supply arrangement, preferred method if known, wet or dry area, occupancy status and target renovation period.
